Boost Marketshare with a Multi-lingual Web site

Some firms are just happy to have a functioning Web site that gets a few thousand hits per month. But for exponential exposure, firms with an international outlook focus on multi-lingual Web sites. Giving Web visitors the option of viewing your site in a variety of languages is a cutting-edge marketing technique that is paying off in spades for savvy marketers.

Bottom line: The Internet has turned the world into a global marketplace whether you're searching for international customers or not.

But how can you tell if you're even getting traffic from overseas visitors. There are a number of tools out there to show you who's visiting your Web site and where they're from. One resource I recommend is Webstat.com. It has a tracking system that allows you to know exactly which country your visitors are coming from.

Knowing Which Languages to Choose

Tracking Web traffic to your site will help shape your decision when it comes to choosing the languages for your Web site. At LetSpeak.com we cater to a broad market so we have our Web site in a variety of languages ranging from German to Haitian Kreyol. The first page our visitors see allows them to choose the language they're most comfortable with. And even though the majority of visitors choose the English language it sets the tone for their entire experience with us. Having a multi-lingual Web site lets our customers know we are committed to them, to meeting them at their point of need. We structured the site with them in mind.

You may say that since we're a translation company it's important for us to have the kind of focus on language. But with the global marketplace continually expanding, companies of all sizes would do well to take the multi-lingual route.

Another benefit to having a multi-lingual site: It gives your visitors the impression you're a large, experienced company. Some of the most successful firms in the world give their customers all kinds of options while viewing their Web sites. To be counted in their company many firms have turned to multi-lingual Web sites. And they're finding great results.

Here are a few ways to convert your Web site from one language into many languages:

1. Monitor the traffic coming to your site. As I mentioned earlier, consider using a tracking system that allows you to see where your visitors are from and what language they speak. Then choose the most popular languages - other than English.

2. Translate key pages of your Web site first. If you're like LetSpeak.com you have numerous Web pages, so converting all of them into other languages could be a large undertaking. Instead, take about three to five of your firm's most critical Web pages and have them translated into your top two or three foreign languages. That way your overseas visitors will get the key messages of your firm. Should all go well with that project you could always translate the rest of your site to attract more business.

3. Continue to gauge responsiveness. Measure how much more business your firm is winning as a result of the changes to the Web site. This way you can find out if it's important to expand into other languages or to offer more information in foreign languages.

In all, by giving Web visitors the option of choosing which language to use when viewing your Web site, you're gaining an advantage over your competition. After all, customers love having an array of options. In this competitive marketplace where almost every industry depends on strong customer service, a multi- lingual Web site will definitely make you stand out and convey to your prospects that you're serious about providing the utmost in customer service.
